5 Most Deathly Foodborne Pathogens For Your Kids

Children love to eat !! They need it for their body growth. Food also can comfort them mentally even we adults do that too, for example, we consume quite a lot of chips and sweets like chocolate and ice cream when we feel anxious or sad. Well, not a good thing I know but once in a blue moon, it’s okay.

Nowadays, many foods seem to spoil our need to eat. Ice cream made from human milk or gold even raw chicken teriyaki become a trend for millennials. This condition forces us to be extra careful with what our children eat since some food served raw or medium can contain deadly pathogens. Here are the five deadly pathogens which caused death.

1. Salmonella

Salmonella is a dangerous pathogen for young children under age of five and also adults with weak immune systems. Mostly salmonella found in raw products such as meat, chicken, unpasteurized dairy products and eggs. This pathogen usually caused diarrhea but in some people, diarrhea last longer until they have to hospitalized. The death occurs when this pathogen spreading into bloodstream created infection and the patient receives poor treatment. There 450 deaths caused by severe Salmonella infection in the US every year.


2. Toxoplasma gondii

Toxoplasma gondii is a leading factor of foodborne illness that can cause death in the United States. Only a few of the healthy person who shows symptoms because our immune systems will protect us from it. But, some people are very prone to this parasite such as a pregnant woman, young children, and person with weak immune systems. The infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii can lead to complications such as Ocular Toxoplasmosis, Congenital Toxoplasmosis, and Cerebral Toxoplasmosis. Ocular Toxoplasmosis can make the patient blind, Congenital Toxoplasmosis can cause miscarriage, while Cerebral Toxoplasmosis can cause death if it spreads to the brain.


3. Listeria Monotytogenes

Listeria Monotygenes causes listeriosis which is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated by this bacteria. In the United States, there is 1,600 people get listeriosis each year with 260 people die. The symptoms will appear 3 to 7 days after this bacteria get into your body systems. The most vulnerable is pregnant women, newborn babies,  and people with the weak immune system but healthy people can get a serious condition too if they eat the contaminated food in a bigger scale such as cheese or raw milk. If this bacteria gives infections in our central nerve system, it can cause meningitis and brain infection, a really critical condition for our lives.

4. Norovirus

This Virus causes around 800 deaths in the United States. Norovirus is very contagious, a Virus from its head into its pin can give infections to 1,000 people. You can also get an infection from multiple types of norovirus since they have many types. The person who gets the illness also can spread it from person to person. This virus leads to acute gastroenteritis which can lead to death if doesn’t take care of properly.

5. Campylobacter spp.

Campylobacter spp is a bacteria that affect more than 1.3 million people in the United States every year. This bacteria can cause an infection that called campylobacteriosis. This infection leads to severe diarrhea which often bloody, fever, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. The more serious infection can lead to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). The patient with GBS will have paralysis for several weeks or years. The condition can also result in permanent nerve damage and even death.
